These are some quick studies from this evening from screen stills of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007). Abigail and I studied them together and it was great getting feedback from someone else. The idea is to capture the composition in as few as values as possible (3-4) – this forces you to look at how the larger shapes are arranged together. It’s a really difficult task trying observe the values in this way – especially in Pirates where there is so much going on in any one shot and a lot of the detail and focus is through more subtle shifts in value. My attempt might be terrible now but I’m hoping that with more frequent practice this year I’ll be able to contribute more interesting compositions, value arrangements and lighting to the team!
I don’t have the stills for comparison as we were painting from the television.
